Google Analytics Keyword Not Provided

September 27, 2012 by Ryan Leave a Comment

If you use Google Analytics to track your site’s traffic, you may have noticed the (Not Provided) keyword source.

Keyword Not Provided

The reason behind the keyword (Not Provided) occurance is that SSL has been implemented as of October 2011 on Google search as a way to make search more secure. Because of the Secure Socket Layer technology, Google analytics is unable to display keyword search queries from secure search.

Over the past few years, Google has been focusing on implementing secure technologies on all products and services. For example, Gmail had the SSL setting enabled by default in January of 2010.

To get accurate information for the top 1000 search queries that drive traffic to your site, you will need to set up Google Webmaster Tools. If you havent done so already, chances are your site doesn’t have a sitemap set up.
